About Us!

Highland Theatre is an award winning high school Theatre department right in the heart of Salt Lake!
We welcome every student with kindness and strive to create a positive and safe environment for everyone.
There are multiple classes offered for every level of actor, and even a class for learning stage crew skills!
While theatre is so much fun, its also a great way to build community and many other skills that can be used in your day to day life.
Meet the Team

While our department may make it look everything we're doing is effortless, it takes a lot of work to set everything up just right. Of course this involves the entire theatre community, but it wouldn't be possible without the dedication of our Theatre Council.
Read on below to find out about the committees in Highland Drama's council and the amazing people behind them!
Aviana Cova
Hi! I'm Aviana Cova, and I am thrilled to be this year's drama club president! This is my senior year at Highland, and I am taking Play/Musical productions, as well as Advanced/IB Theatre. I love dandelions, scary movies, playing the Sims, and, of course, performing! I can't wait for this incredible year!

CLASSES OFFERED
Theatre Foundations I/II - This is our beginning level course. Students are introduced to the art of theatre through history and different performance techniques. We watch and review various productions to see excellence, and complete projects that promote an understanding of theatre and build collaboration skills. All levels welcome.
Theatre Foundations III/IV - Intermediate drama. This is our acting-intensive course for those who already have a strong base level understanding of theatre as an artform. We study performance techniques for pantomime, monologues, classic scenes, and contemporary scenes. There is a lot of 1:1 coaching in this class. A lot of the work is to prepare students to compete in UHSAA individual events in March, then we put on a play for the end of the year.
Theatre Foundations V/VI - Advanced Drama, also combined with IB drama. This class builds skills in theatre beyond acting, such as directing, devising, and playwrighting. This class is excellent for those who have strong acting skills and are interested in expanding their knowledge, expertise, and resume. IB students complete additional research projects.
Play Productions - This is the class where we produce shows: a musical in the fall, a student directed musical Revue, a one act, and a spring play. Students should have a strong understanding of acting and putting a show together, and are expected to help with ALL elements of production, like prop making and costuming. There is also a significant time commitment outside of class for rehearsals and performances.
Stage Crew - This is all the background work! Students get a hands-on experience with set and prop construction, fly rail, lights, sound, and more. Some time outside of class is required. It is highly recommended that students take woodshop or welding as a pre-requisite, particularly for safety reasons.
